Confidence in intimacy: communication, comfort and attention

It is possible to feel nervous before a date with someone you find very attractive. You do not need perfect confidence before talking about intimacy. Start with what feels comfortable for each of you, the pace you prefer and how to ask for a pause. Both people should have room for their own feelings.

Ask rather than assume

Choose a calm moment outside an intimate situation. Speak from your own perspective: “I sometimes feel nervous and want us both to feel comfortable.” Then give your partner time to answer. Asking what they enjoy creates more space for honesty than promising a guaranteed outcome.

• Avoid comparing either of you with other people’s stories.
• Agree that either person can ask to pause.
• Discuss any product you plan to use openly.
• Afterwards, ask about the experience without demanding a score.

Time is one part of the conversation

If the issue recurs and troubles you, write down what you want to discuss with a doctor or qualified psychosexual professional. You can seek help without arriving with a diagnosis or a polished explanation. Whatever product you consider, keep space for questions, mutual agreement and realistic expectations. Buying something does not oblige you to demonstrate a particular result.
