Lidocaine spray: understanding concentration and product information

Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic that temporarily blocks nerve signals. When an intimate spray contains it, read the information for that particular product. Instructions written for another medicine are not automatically a suitable guide.

Concentration is not a dose

Labels can show percentages, mg/g, millilitres and other units. These answer different questions about composition, the amount of an ingredient per unit of product, or package volume. A number on the bottle does not automatically tell you how much the spray pump dispenses. A product name is not enough information to calculate instructions.

FUSION is described as containing 10% lidocaine in a 10 ml bottle. Those specifications alone establish neither a usage routine nor a proven duration of effect. When a product has been transferred into another bottle, ask separately about its origin, dispenser suitability and the information supplied to the user.

Consider both partners

NHS notes that topical anaesthetic can transfer to a partner and reduce sensation. Discuss use beforehand and check the relevant precautions in the product instructions.

• How should compatibility with other products and protection be checked?
• Where can you find the complete current instructions?

Keep the original label and purchase information. Do not increase the amount in an attempt to reproduce a number from an advertisement or someone else’s review.
